The Water of Uncertainty

The greatest challenge for the human mind is how to have unwavering belief in that which cannot be proven. As humans we seek to find the empirical evidence in everything. What we fail to realize is that everything we know can be questioned with the same logic.

A Love Letter to the African‐American Female

By: Michelle Edmonds, M.A., M.Ed. Nutritionist| Life Coach|Author

A storm is traveling our way. In most areas, it has arrived. The winds are fierce and threaten much damage and loss of life. The storm has been named “Obesity” by the people who track these patterns. In the eye of this storm is the AfricanAmerican female. “AfricanAmerican women have the highest obesity rate of any group of Americans. Four out of five black women have a body mass index above 25%, the threshold for being overweight or obese”, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. AfricanAmerican females frequently describe themselves as “curvaceous” and "thick”, with a little meat on their bones. The Commodores affectionately referred to black women as "brick houses", while Destiny’s Child describes the derrieres of AfricanAmerican women as "Bootylicious". To me, it sounds like people pretending to be on a cruise liner when they are really sailing in a battleship. Nevertheless, African Americans have perfected creativity and denial; weight loss is no different. We have even designed our special brand of nutritional consultants. The list is comprised of retired singers, comedians and talk show hosts, all who give us wise counsel in this subject. We ignore the fact that each of these counselors currently exhibits the very problem in which they providing counsel. But, these are minor details easily overlooked by the masses. It seems few things are authentic anymore. We are in love with this new brand. We don’t want to get in their face because really don’t want anyone to get in ours. It is a duplicitous arrangement. Thus AfricanAmerican women, in particular, see no conflict in taking counsel on how to lose weight and manage diabetes, from overweight, diabetic sista’s! In fact, the ones who have never been overweight are seen as traitors to “the cause”. Mo’Nique is an example of this special brand of wellness coaching. We roared while listening to her comedic skits on “skinny bitches”. Profane at times, Mo'Nique has since cleaned up her act and her weight. It seems the moment she realized that she was able to crossover from being obese to just overweight, fat was no longer fashionable. Her ‘skinny bitch” jokes have quieted down. Sherri Shepherd also has a famous skit about being obese. In fact, it is the backdrop of the movie Soul Mate, where throughout, Sherri is pretending to be comfortable with her curves. The skit concludes with a moment of transparency as she finally falls to the floor and breaks out in tears. In real life, Sherri admits to breaking down off stage too. In a recent interview, she recently shared that she was so angry with her ex husband, that she contemplated trying to kill him with a frying pan. However, not long after the ending of this 4month marriage, Sherri began losing weight and released the book entitled: Plan D: How to Lose Weight and Beat Diabetes (Even If You Don't Have It), 2013. Ms. Shepherd is both overweight and diabetic. We have also anointed retired singers. Glady’s Knight is an honorary family nutritionist and meal planner. Who could forget her magnificent voice and numerous hits from Glady’s Knight and the Pips. Glady’ gave us the book, “At Home With Gladys Knight: Her Personal Recipe for Living Well, Eating Right, and Loving Life”, was published in 2001 by the American Diabetes Association.

We also knighted semiretired songbird, Patti Labelle. Do you recall the feeling as she would begin to flap her arms from her sides, appearing as though she was about to take off? You just knew that you were about to hear one of the highest notes you had ever heard from any performer, hands down. Patti cares about us too and so among her repertoire of books, one is: “Patti Labelle's Lite Cuisine,” published in 2004. In 1994, Patti passed out on stage after she learned that she too was diabetic. She credits this disease to her weakness for fried chicken and pasta. And, last but certainly not least there is Oprah. Who can forget as Oprah dropped from over 200 to 140 something, with the help of her fitness trainer Bob Greene? These are all ladies who teach, but do not practice (for long), in the area they are giving counsel. Ladies who have taken in too much wind and rain from the storm, while simultaneously trying to give you a hand out of the puddle. We love our men too, somehow, we preserve them mostly for fitness and bodybuilding. I personally think we save them for “eye candy” as we protect our “doo” from too much sweat and our fat, from too much jiggle. Nevertheless, the sista's are loyal to their male fitness gurus, however disappointing the results.

Do you see the lion lurking behind the trees? Predators. Patient. Strategic. They will encircle their prey and strategize their attack, precisely at the right moment. Who is their prey? YOU. The sister who is seemingly unaware that this “food thing” is about more than being curvaceous and maintaining a fuller bustline. Whether we are burying ourselves in muffins, brimming lattes, fried chicken or goat meat, coconut “water”, oatmeal porridge or not eating at all, we are falling prey and remaining in the eye of the

MICHELLE EDMONDS, M.A., M.ED. WELLNESS AND LIFE COACH SERENITY WEIGHT LOSS·SATURDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2015,

If Weight Loss is such a beautiful thing, why does Al Sharpton look so bad?

You know what I’m talking about. In fact, ya’ll are talkin’ ‘bout it too! You are talking about him to his face. You are talkin’ ‘bout him behind his back! Many of you have made Mr. Sharpton a conversation piece at the water cooler at work! I heard that some of you are walking up to him at public speaking engagements and rudely commenting on his appearance directly. Blacks are talkin’ ‘bout him; Whites are talkin’ ‘bout him, but they are afraid of being accused of being racist! It’s ok; the secret question, that is not really a secret anymore is out: Why does Mr. Al Sharpton look so bad? As the author of the Serenity Weight Loss and Detoxification Program©, founded in 1992, we have served well over 15, 000 clients. Therefore, as a Life and Wellness coach, Mr. Sharpton’s appearance is of great concern for the following reasons:

 All too often people are under the misconception that the majority of people who release weight will ultimately look unhealthy. This is not true, but it fuels the practice of setting artificially high weight loss goals. I have worked with Serenity Weight Loss team members who have set goals to drop as low as 260 lbs. We are a society of smart, well educated people. Surely no one in our culture should strive to weigh 260 lbs, AFTER releasing 40 lbs to get there!

 Both Mr. Sharpton’s results (and Al Roker for that matter) fuels the myth that the excess weight on African American women is really bone structure. The truth is, African~American women have the highest rate of obesity that any other race of women in the world.

It is a community with a plethora of misunderstood “big~boned” females.

So, the question begs: What happened to Mr. Sharpton?

1. Inadequate, structured colon detoxification program. Colonics are a good tool and best when they accompany an oral colon cleansing program. Why? The digestive tract begins BEFORE the colon; products taken orally cleanse the entire digestive tract. Fat is a toxin that is excreted in the stool. However, the fat molecules are broken down, liquefied by the liver and sent to the colon to be removed from the body. If one is not regular, the fat has a chance to be reabsorbed back into the blood stream, only to be converted back into fat.

2. Mr. Sharpton embraced the vegan lifestyle. This lifestyle is an opinion about how one should eat, similar to the Blood~Type Diet, Atkins Diet, Raw Foods Diet, etc. However, we have lost track of what is opinion and what is scientific fact. The Vegan lifestyle provides insufficient protein, because the plants that man eats do not need the amount of protein and minerals and vitamins that humans require. It is true that many of the largest and strongest animals are vegan. However, they nap as much as 90% of their day; a habit not conducive
to the lifestyle of man. It is also true that the jungle animals known to be strongest are the wild cat family, and they eat meat. The PALEO lifestyle is the only lifestyle that is NOT based on opinion. Further, I have seen how difficult it is for people to change their eating lifestyle. Even if we could support a worldwide conversion to veganism for health reasons, people simply would not and could not follow it.

3. Mr. Sharpton did NOT consume vitamins and minerals in liquid form, in proportion to his body weight. Plants need only 3 minerals and humans need 60; when vitamins are included in that count, man needs a total of 90 nutrients, which plants do not require.

GOOD FOOD IS ABOUT SELF LOVE
As keep with the theme of love, remember that not eating, habitual meal skipping and eating foods that do not support you are demonstrations that t you are lacking self-love. You are probably thinking that a bad diet and meal skipping is merely a function of your busy schedule. Remember, we are talking about behavior that is habitual. Behavior that has caused you to be fat, sick and tired. This is a LOVE LETTER. It is my hope that you read this article as you would an entry into my private diary. A personal sharing of my love and prayer for all people. Of course, as I read the statistics again, it is justified that my heart goes out to people most in need. African American women are the most overweight women of all races. As an African American female, trained psychologist, nutritionist and owner of a wellness program for 21 years, I feel I am qualified to speak on this subject. I am insightful enough to realize there is a message here for all people, who are challenged with their weight. From the eye of the storm comes a message for all of us. It is a message for males and females, and people who are overweight from all races and ethnic groups. It is to “Detox Your Mind or the fat Will Come Back”. We must change our thinking.

The Water of Uncertainty

The greatest challenge for the human mind is how to have unwavering belief in that which cannot be proven. As humans we seek to find the empirical evidence in everything. What we fail to realize is that everything we know can be questioned with the same logic.

Ye Have Not, Because Ye Ask Not

Many of our Lords Words have been portrayed by man as clichés and superficial, one dimensional meanings. In the Christian family, we regurgitate most of what we've heard without an intimate, detailed study of that particular thing. If it rolls off the tongue well, then it must be supreme Truth and the sanctuary goes wild (in my sports announcers’ voice).
